Trigger Warning
Or racist. When I first heard this I thought, what a super extreme thing to claim. I’m always looking for the most honest perspective, and this felt inaccurate to the variety of our problems.
Then I started seeing it.
I saw the way people treated my male coworkers. I understood why being gay was seen differently than being lesbian. I started understanding why men were becoming more and more addicted to porn. I started seeing why people hated cats and Taylor Swift, but love dogs and football. And don’t get me wrong, I’m no Swiftie, but again, I am a lover of full transparency and let’s see it for what it is, most dislike her because she’s a woman.
In school, in friend groups, in sports and on teams, in my family, in friendships, and especially in relationships with men, I have seen how addicted we all are to male validation*. Homophobia is often just sexism and a lot of racism is layered on sexism. It has in fact poisoned everything.
Once you see it, you understand why ignorance is bliss. Especially as a woman – imagine that.
I don’t feel like diving into the who what when where why’s of how everything is sexist. The way we talk, the way women are portrayed in media, the way heterosexual relationships fall into stereotypes is all misogynistic. We even have a slur for every oppressed group except women. And hey, I’m not asking for a slur (though I would argue with anyone that bitch is ours), but I do not find it a coincidence that we are also the only marginalized group in which men are not included. It is clear that we don’t see women as people with full-agency and full-autonomy, who are deserving of respect.
